The reason Harry survived was because Voldemort attacked the Horcrux inside Harry rather than Harry himself. It's only ability is to make the ghosts of people who were already dead come back. The stone didn't let Harry come back at all. Second, it's not actually the Stone of Respawn so much as the Stone of Spectator Mode. Say what you will about her writing and worldbuilding, she planned and plotted out the actual ending to it. If you want to give credit to Rowling for setting up his death, you also have to give credit for her setting up what you percieve as the "Stone of Respawn" that allowed Harry to get out of it.
